Hair Care
Unless they have decided to specialize in nails, makeup, or skincare, most cosmetologists spend the majority of their day cutting, coloring, texturizing, and styling the hair of their clients. This alone provides great variety to the day to day business of a cosmetologist, as each client has different wants, needs, and requests. Many hair care services are provided in combination with other services, such as cutting the hair and then styling it afterwards, or performing a chemical texturizing service such as permanent waving, and then demonstrating to the client how to style their hair.
Scalp Massage
Almost every client visiting the cosmetologist for a hair care service will require a shampoo; this is an excellent time for the cosmetologist to perform a scalp massage. A scalp massage is not only relaxing for the client, but it also improves scalp circulation, and is the perfect way to apply conditioner or other treatments to the hair and scalp.
Skin Care
Cosmetologists who specialize in skin care may perform facials, apply makeup, or remove unwanted hair by tweezing, waxing, laser, or electrolysis. They may also perform specific procedures, such as exfoliation or an eyebrow wax, to clients who are in need of these services. They often recommend the appropriate cosmetics based upon the skin type and individualized requirements of their clients, such as skin softening creams, anti-aging products, and makeup.
Nail Services
Most cosmetologists will perform and occasional manicure or pedicure, but some will decide to focus on these services and specialize in them. In addition to manicures and pedicures, nail technicians may apply artificial nails, create nail art, or do a paraffin wax treatment to soften a client's hands. Artificial nail clients are some of the most loyal ones in the salon, since their nails will need attention a minimum of every two weeks or so, depending upon how fast they grow.
