Why Nail Trimming Is Important to Dogs

As part of your dog's grooming, you should also be informed about how to trim your dog's nails. Nail trimming is not a must, as not all dogs need it. The nails of some dogs may just need dog nail care, but not trimming. Some dogs already scratch their nails in surfaces and naturally wear the edges down. However, some dogs need nail trimming because untrimmed nails can also pose dangers to your dog. Ingrown nails can also happen to your pet, as well as broken nails that can even cause wounds. The How-To's of Dog Pedicures

There are many ways to get a dog pedicure for your pet. You can simply go to a veterinarian for nail grooming, or to professionla dog groomers. However, you can also do the nail grooming on your own. Get yourself a trusty dog nail trimmer. When you trim your dog's nails, remember not to cut from the top. Dog's nails should be cut the other way around. Nail trimmers are pretty easy to use, especially when you get the hang of it. You can get a dog groomer or your vet to show you how to use it before you try it on your own. Dog pedicures can also be dangerous if you don't know how to do them properly. You can easily cut through the pink-colored part of the nail, and wound your dog. Take note that when you trim your dog's nails, stick to the white area. It is your decision if you just want to cut off the edge, or cut off the entire white part, as long as you don't go beyond that as that will cause bleeding. Aside from the nail trimmer, you also need a Quick Stop Powder so you can prevent bleeding when you cut too far back into the nail. Take note, however, that the nails of some dog breeds may also look different. If the line that separates the white part and the pink part is barely distinguishable, check the center of the nail. If you already see a dark spot in the center, you are already at the pink part of the nail. After trimming, you can also use a nail file to soften the edges of the newly-cut toenails. Filing the nails can also be done regularly and more often than nail trimming. You can file your dog's nails when you find it necessary to do so. However, if you do decide to trim your dog's nails on your own, you should probably do so around twice in a month. As you progress, you will definitely get the hang of it and soon, it will be effortless.

Dog nail care also needs to be taught to your pet. A pet that has no idea what nail grooming is might be surprised to see you walking towards it with a scary-looking tool in hand.
