The Darker Past of London
Think of London and images of a bustling city filled with suited workers rushing to catch the tube, camera-happy tourists soaking up the sun, the best bars and bistros for miles and a skyline marked by myriad landmarks and attractions waiting for the taking. Not to mention the food - with the most exotic restaurants, from classy stretches in Chelsea to amazing Indian eateries on the famed Brick Lane, London has something for everyone - and their stomachs.
One thing you don't tend to think about, however, is any of the more sinister secrets this spreading city may have. And these secrets, when discovered, can reveal a fascinating look into London's past that enthrals and excites millions who dare to explore. Most people have heard of the Tower of London - an impassive prison block where royal and wealthy criminals were held until they usually met a grisly death within the four walls surrounding the fortress.
A visit to the Tower of London will envelop you in this practice, showing displays of various items of torture previously used on prisoners to extract the truth - and perhaps more - from them before they were often punished by death.
Following that, a trip to the London Dungeon will continue your foray into the darker side of this majestic city. Ever wondered how prisoners were treated a couple of hundred years ago? Or how about the absorbing - albeit fictional - tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street? All will be revealed within this spooky attraction - as well as a wealth of tales about one of London's most notorious serial killers, Jack the Ripper.
If you really want to find out about Jack, you'll be able to find a walk that takes to the streets of London and reveals exactly where and how Jack carried out his cruel and horrific murders - just be sure not to wander off during one of these atmospheric sessions.
There are plenty of other ghost walks and tours around London taking place every night - stop off at a tourist information shop to find some leaflets advertising various options. What's more, you'll also find books detailing stories about haunted London and other attractions, so you'll be able to create your own tours at no expense and with all the places you want to visit as priority.
And after all of that spooky sightseeing, you may want to even check out hotels in London that are, perhaps, not haunted - or maybe the opposite? In any case, if things start to go bump in the night, just make sure you're not staying near any barber shops.
