Breast Lift Surgery Procedures
Saggy breast is one common problem for women nowadays. Gravity, weight loss, aging are common factors for the development of droopy breasts. Good news is that mastopexy or most commonly known as breast lifting is now available in the Philippines to bring back firmer and shapelier breasts. The procedures on how mastopexy is done vary from surgeon to surgeon and the degree of the work that should be done. However, the following procedures were provided to give an idea on how breast lifting in the Philippines was usually performed.
There are variations of techniques that can be used in mastopexy such as the concentric or doughnut breast lift and the anchor shaped breast lift. The first method is usually done for patients who have smaller and less severely drooping breasts while those women with larger or more severely drooping, sagging breasts would be advised to have the anchor-shaped breast lift.
In concentric breast lift technique, concentric circles are drawn and cut around the areola. This concentric shaped skin surrounding the areola will be removed and the nipple and areola are moved upwards. Following the movement of the nipple and areola, the outer skin surrounding the areola is sutured into place. This method results less scarring than the other technique of breast lifting.
In the anchor-shaped mastopexy, the surgeon will draw a "key-hole" shape directly above the nipple and the areola. Then, at the bottom of the key-hole, your doctor will draw an anchor shape from the right to the left side of the breast. The skin in the (upper cross-hatched) area of the "anchor" will be removed along with some excess breast tissue. The nipple and areola are moved up to the (lower cross-hatched) "key-hole," then the skin is sutured around the areola, vertically down to the chest, and side to side along the newly-created bottom fold of the breast.
In either way, the breast lift surgery usually takes one to three hours to finish for both breasts. You will experience soreness and bruising for two to three days. Your surgeon will give you some medication to lessen the pain and to hasten the healing process. You will also be advised to wear a surgical bra for a couple of weeks to support your breasts. The gauze dressing will be removed after a couple of days, and the stitches are also removed about two weeks after breast lift surgery. Listen carefully to your surgeon on what are the things that you have to be careful of to avoid any complications. He/she will also provide you the schedule on when you could go back to your normal activities.

Dr. Edwin Paul V. Magallona is a board certified Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon born in Quezon City and raised in the university town of Laguna. He spent his secondary and collegiate years in the University of the Philippines at Los Banos. Since realizing his inclination in the biological sciences, he graduated with a degree of B.S. Biology, major in Cell Biology in 1990.
He then pursued his medical education at the DeLa Salle University College of Medicine and obtained the degree in 1994.
After a year of postgraduate internship at the Makati Medical Center and passing the August 1994 medical board exams, he decided to further train for 5 years in the specialty ofGeneral Surgery at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center. And immediately after completion of training, he decided to further subspecialize with another 3 years in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery under the Consortium I program (consisting of UERMMMC, Makati Medical Center, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, Rizal Medical Center).
He passed and topped the written examination and later successfully completed the oral examination given by the Philippine Board of Plastic Surgery, the only organization that looks over fellowship and resident training and ultimately officially certified plastic surgeon.
