You may only be looking for a basic haircut, but you still want to find a hair salon that meets your needs. Finding the right hair salon and stylist for you may take a while, and require you to try multiple people. But there are some things you can do to make that journey a little quicker.

This will give you a feel for the salon, as well as provide basic information on the background of the salon and stylists including prices and hours of operation. Often they will also provide an email address or a submission form on their website where you can submit additional questions. Regardless of your research method, doing a little homework before selecting a salon will make it a lot easier to find the right salon for you.
One last step you may want to take is to visit a few salons that you seem to like. When you visit the hair salon, you can let them know what you are doing, or you can take a more stealth approach and say that you are just looking. Regardless of your approach, checkout the layout of the salon, absorb the atmosphere, including the demeanor of the receptionist and stylists. You should quickly be able to assess whether or not you will be comfortable at this salon. One last thing to look for before you leave is training certificates for the stylists and any displays of newspaper or magazine write-ups on the salon. If they have them, they are usually prominently displayed.
If you put a little effort into researching hair salons before you try a new one, then you are more likely to be happy with the results.
