How to Make a Maple End Grain Cutting Board
My favorite woodworking projects are building butcher block end-grain cutting boards. This is truly a back to basics project and one of the most useful items in the kitchen. Building a custom cutting board not only makes you fill good but makes a great gift that will last a life time. I hope you enjoy building this board as much as I did.
In this project you will build an end grain Maple cutting board 7 inches wide x 11 inches long x 2 inches thick. This project is designed for the person with basic tool and woodworking skills.
Recommended Tools
- Table Saw
- Router with ½" Round Over Bit
- Tape Measure
- Belt Sander
- Random Orbit Sander
- Pencil
- Bar clamps (4)
Materials Needed
- Hard Maple, 2 pieces planed and straight edged 4" wide x 38" long x ¾" thick, approximately (2) board feet. If you have other lumber you can substitute it for the maple.
- Waterproof Glue Such as Titebond III
- Sand Paper 80,120 and 150 grit
- Cutting Board Oil for Finishing
Safety First
When using power tools follow all directions associated with that tool and always wear safety glasses and hearing protection.
Making a Maple End Grain Cutting Board
To make an end grain cutting board it is easier to glue strips of wood together to create a slab and then crosscut the slab to make the rows for the board rather than attempting to glue them all together at once.
Step 1:
Cut your maple lumber into 3 strips 2" wide x 38" long, and 1 strip 1" wide x 38" long on your table saw. Make sure you have a sharp blade that makes a smooth 90 degree cut, because you have to glue these strips together to make the slab for your cutting board.
Step 2:
Now take the three 2" wide strips and place them beside each other, next place the 1" strip on the outside edge. So now you have three 2" strips and one 1" strip lying next to each other making a slab 7" wide by 38 inches long by ¾ inches thick. It is also a good idea to turn the grain of each piece (end grain) 90-degrees to the one next to it, for both strength and to enhance the checkerboard look.
Step 3:
Now that you have the slab laid out like you want it take your pencil and mark each of the three joints 1 through 3 on each side of the joint. This way you have a reference on each joint during the gluing process so you don't have to worry, do I have the strip turned the correct way.
Step 4:
Next set up your bar clamps and get the glue ready (I suggest you use Titebond glue this glue has been approved for use in making cutting boards). Apply glue to one edge of each strip and smooth it out with your finger or a putty knife making sure the entire surface has been covered.
Step 5
Carefully assembled the groups of strips to minimize cutting problems later (squaring across the top of the slab will make the assembly easer with less sanding) and applied clamping pressure, add just enough pressure to pull the joints together. Also make sure the numbers on the joints line up that you placed on them in step #3. It's also a good idea to wipe away the excess glue that squeezed out during clamping; this makes the following step much easier.
Step 6:
Let the glue dry for at least one hour (follow the instructions for the glue you choose to use). After removing bar clamps, sand the top and bottom of your slab smooth with a belt sander. Start with 80-grit sandpaper, then 120-grit. If you have access to a surface planer it would be better and faster to use it instead of the belt sander.
Step 7:
Now that you have your slab glued together and cleaned up, take it to the table saw and using your miter gauge (make sure your gauge is square with the blade) square up one end of the slab.
Now cross cut your slab into 15 pieces 2 ¼" wide.
Step 8:
Next take the (15) 2 ¼" pieces carefully lay them out stacking them in an alternating pattern, placing the 1" wide strip towards your right and on the next piece having it towards your left this causes the glue joints to mismatch making a strong nice looking butcher block pattern.
Step 9:
Now that you have your butcher block pattern assembled in a form you are happy with take your pencil and make two wavy lines through the length of the board. This will help you keep the pieces in alignment when you glue them up.
Step 10:
Set up your bar clamps and get the glue ready (I suggest you use Titebond glue this glue has been approved for use in making cutting boards). Apply glue to one face side of each piece and smooth it out with your finger or a putty knife making sure the entire surface has been covered.
Step 11:
Carefully assembled the groups of pieces to minimize cutting problems later (squaring across the top of the block will make the assembly easer with less sanding, also make sure the sides are even and square) and applied clamping pressure, add just enough pressure to pull the joints together. Also make sure the pencil lines are in alignment that you placed on them in step #9. It's also a good idea to wipe away the excess glue that squeezed out during clamping; this makes the following step much easier.
Step 12:
Let the glue dry for at least one hour (follow the instructions for the glue you choose to use). After removing bar clamps, sand the top and bottom of your slab smooth with a belt sander. Start with 80-grit sandpaper, then 120-grit and a final sanding with 150-grit using a random orbit sander.
Step 13:
Now that you have your block sanded smooth on the top and bottom surface take it to the table saw and trim the edges so they are even and then sand them smooth. Next you can take a router with a ball bearing round over bit (or cutter of your choice) and route the edges.
Step 14:
Sand all edges you just routed and give the entire board a good look over and sand any areas that need it.
Step 15:
Finishing, there are many food-safe finishes available but on my cutting boards, I use a board oil made from mineral oil bee's wax and lemon oil. This type of oil is thicker than standard mineral oil helping to preserve and protect the wood from moisture. Also, it does not form a hard film on the surface that would be damaged by normal use of a cutting board. You may ask how much oil do I use the answer is never enough. When you oil your board let the oil soak in for 10 to 15 minutes. If the board soaks up the oil right away add more to surface and let stand, after 15 minutes remove any excess oil from the surface with a clean paper towel. This process will protect your board against moisture and extend the life of all your cutting boards.
I hope you have enjoyed this project and now you have a very functional cutting board to use or give as a gift whichever the case it is something you made that will last a lifetime.

Cutting Rhythms $39.95 There are many books on the technical aspects of film and video editing: e.g., how to use software packages like Final Cut Pro and Avid. Much rarer are books on how an editor thinks and makes decisions. Faced with hundreds of hours of raw footage, a film editor must craft the pieces into a coherent whole. Rhythm is a fundamental tool of the film editor; when a filmmaker adjust the length of shots in relation to one another, he or she affects the entire pace, structure, and mood of the film. Until this book, rhythm was considered a matter of intuition; good editors should just 'know' when to make a cut. Cutting Rhythms breaks down the issue of rhythm in an accessible way that allows filmmakers to apply the principles to their own work and increase their creativity. This book offers possibilities rather than prescriptions. It presents questions editors or filmmakers can ask themselves about their work, and a clear and useful vocabulary for working with those questions. Filled with timeless principles and thought-provoking examples from a variety of international films, this book is destined to become a staple in the filmmaker's library. * This is the only book to address the issue of rhythm in film editing. It's what separates an OK film from a great one! * Easy-to-apply principles that will translate to better work. Don't just guess where to make a cut--read this book. * Examples from a range of international films show you practical illustrations of the concepts at work. |

The Cutting Edge $2.49 The great adventure had ended happily. The good folk of Krasnegar discovered that a beautiful princess could, indeed, succeed her royal father and rule in her own right, and rule very well, too. And when Queen Inos married Rap, the former stableboy, he turned out to be a very good king. He never admitted that he was a sorcerer, and everyone knew that Rap was a Man of His Word, so that was all right. The years passed. Rap and Inos raised a family, prospering in their remote little kingdom. But trouble was brewing in the great world outside. The aged Imperor grew ever more erratic, more tyrannical. His grandson Shandie, the boy Rap had befriended, was now a great soldier, struggling to suppress ever-growing upheaval in the borderlands while he waited to inherit the throne. Strange prophecies of upheaval and disaster spread. When the rumors reached even to Krasnegar, Rap scoffed at them as superstition--until one night a god appeared and confirmed that the truth was likely to be far worse. On his travels long ago, Rap himself had made a terrible blunder. Because of that, the world of Pandemia was now poised on the brink of utter disaster. The last thing Rap wanted was another adventure, and that might be the last thing he would ever get. |

Metric Pattern Cutting $40.99 Metric Pattern Cutting was first published in 1975 to provide a straightforward introductory book for students beginning courses in flat pattern cutting. The fourth edition continues to offer an introduction to the basic principles of pattern cutting, with a range of good basic blocks and examples of their application to garments. However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of 'flat cutting' with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. The sections on computer-aided design and grading have been updated. The size charts of body measurements have been revised, reflecting the changing shape of women's bodies. |

The OCD Chef Cutting Board $25.99 Cooking is as much a science as it is an art, and science requires precision. You need precise cooking temperatures, exacting timing, and perfect knife skills. Take a look at sushi chefs and the care they take in cutting their tuna into millimeters thick slices. You might not be a sushi chef, but you pride yourself on the exacting methods required for making even a lowly bologna and cheese sandwich. You have to center the bread on the cutting board, put exactly 20ml of mayonaise spread into an even 1mm thick layer from edge to edge. Only one slice of bologna only, thank you, cut directly from the mortadella link and not from those awful packages at the grocer's refrigerator. Then, place the second slice of bread atop the bologna slice, square it off, and remove 6mm from each edge. Finally, cut the sandwich from corner to corner using 45 degree angles, exactly. If the angles are not 45 degrees, then you've failed to cut 6mm from at least one edge of the sandwich, and you have to start all over again. It's about standards, and if you fail to follow the standards, you may as well stop living. That's why we brought forth this cutting board. It's designed specifically for you - the obsessive compulsive chef that needs more order in your life. Use the guides etched into the surface of this fine piece of beechwood to guide your knife with exacting measurements, precise angles, and handy definitions. Learn just how small a julienne is, and get it right next time! This is a chiffonade, ya dingus. Features Made from naturally anti-bacterial beechwood Dimensions:9.1 inches wide11.8 inches long0.5 inches thick Etched and marked with precise measurements and angles Good for the obsessive compulsive or "fussy" chef |

Metric Pattern Cutting for Women's Wear $56.99 Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s Wear , first published in 1975, provides a straightforward introductory book for students beginning courses in flat pattern cutting. This fifth edition continues to offer an introduction to the principles of pattern cutting, with a range of good basic blocks and examples of their application to garments. New for this edition is the inclusion of colour to help students recognize the different sections of the book and to enhance the garment illustrations? Colour illustrations also offer a new dimension to the updated material on computer-aided design and the CAD chapter now provides students with a clear guide to the technology. The size charts have been revised to reflect the changes in body sizing, the co-ordination with European size charts and to the way that clothes are now marketed to different sectors. The great expansion of casual wear has led to the growth of 'flat cutting' with no darting, and the section devoted to this type of cutting has been further expanded. This best-selling textbook with its tried-and-tested presentation of authoritative text and clear diagrams remains the essential purchase for students of fashion and design. |

The Good Teen $13.99 For many parents the thought of the teen years holds more dread than all the sleepless nights of infancy and scraped knees of childhood combined. After all, teens are obstinate, inconsiderate, and defiant; they sulk and stress; they are prone to bad decisions and unreasonable behavior. Given the option, most parents would happily skip the storms of adolescence and move right in to the relative calm of young adulthood if they could. Who can blame them when popular wisdom tells them that their lovable twelve-year-old will be replaced by an unpredictable, emotional volcano at the age of thirteen? Although the word teenager has become synonymous with trouble, the evidence is clear: Adolescents have a bad rap—and according to groundbreaking new research, it’s an undeserved one. In The Good Teen , Richard Lerner lays bare compelling new data on the lives of teens today, dismantling old myths and redefining normal adolescence. Time and again his work reveals that in spite of the stereotypes, today’s teens are basically good kids who maintain healthy relationships with their families. Overflowing with real-life anecdotes and cutting-edge science, The Good Teen encourages new thinking, new public policies, and new programs that focus on teens’ strengths. Every teen, whatever their ability or background, has the same potential for healthy and successful development. In The Good Teen , Lerner presents the five personality characteristics, called the 5 Cs, that are proven to fuel positive development: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring. When the 5 Cs coalesce, a sixth emerges, Contribution: where young people contribute to their own development in an energetic and optimistic way. He also prescribes specific ways parents can foster the 5 Cs at home and in their communities. From the Hardcover edition. |

The Cutting $7.99 From a formidable new voice in suspense fiction comes an edge-of-the-seat story of a homicide detective on the trail of a killer, who slays with exacting precision, and who harbors a terrifying motive Detective Sergeant Michael McCabe moved from New York City to Portland, Maine, to escape a dark past: both the ex-wife who’d left him for an investment banker, and the tragic death of his brother, a hero cop gone bad. He sought to raise his young daughter away from the violence of the big city . . . so he’s unprepared for the horrific killer he discovers, whose bloody trail may lead to Portland’s social elite. Early on a September evening, the mutilated body of a pretty teenaged girl, a high school soccer star, is found dumped in a scrap-metal yard. She had been viciously assaulted, but her heart had been cut out of her chest with surgical precision . The very same day a young businesswoman, also a blonde and an athlete, was abducted as she jogged through the streets of the city’s west end. McCabe suspects both crimes are the work of the same man---a killer who’s targeting the young---who is clearly well-versed in complex surgical procedures, and who may have struck before. Just as the investigation is beginning, McCabe’s ex-wife reemerges, suddenly determined to reclaim the daughter she heedlessly abandoned years earlier. With the help of his straight-talking (and, at times, alluring) partner, Maggie Savage, McCabe begins a race against time to rescue the missing woman and unmask a sadistic killer---before more lives are lost. |
