My 9 year-old son watched me shave this morning. I could see the wheels turning in his head. He stood quietly, taking in every detail, thinking about how he will spread the foam, position the razor just so, and shave.
Since that day isn’t far off, here’s a short article written just for that young man in your life. You know the one: he follows you into the bathroom, stands close, and watches your every move—the one who wants to be just like you.
"After you reach puberty, the first facial hair you notice will probably be on your chin. Some people call it “peach fuzz” because that’s what it looks and feels like! Over time that peach fuzz will spread. It will get thicker, darker, and easier to see. The color and thickness of the hair on your face is hereditary. If your dad has a dark heavy beard, you’ll probably have one, too. If he has a light thin beard, chances are good that’s how you’ll look.
Shaving is a very grown-up thing to do. When you and your parents decide it’s time to start, begin with an inexpensive disposable razor and shaving cream. As you get older and your beard fills out, you can try other razors and some of the many shaving creams, gels, and foams that are available. Selecting the right razor and shaving cream depends on the thickness of your beard, the shape of your face, and the sensitivity of your skin.
